The history of the charming northern New Mexico town of Taos dates back pre-Columbian times. The ancient pueblo of Taos may be the oldest continuously occupied community in the country. The Pueblo Indian village has adobe houses, several stories high, in which the Pueblo people have lived for more than 1000 years.
The old Spanish farming community of Ranchos de Taos, with its picturesque San Francisco de Assis church, lies immediately to the south. This area was settled by the Spaniards in the 1700's, and has been the site of much local history, which is emphasized at many local museums, including the Kit Carson home, the Charles Bent House, where Governor Bent was murdered during a revolt in 1847, and the Millicent Rogers museum, displaying American and Hispanic art.
There are many tourist attractions in the town of Taos, which has been a major "art colony" since 1898, and home to such notable figures as D.H. Lawrence, Mabel Dodge Luhan, and Eanger Irving Couse. Numerous art galleries and museums surround the plaza, and the incredible natural beauty of the area, which lies at the foot of the lovely Sangre De Cristo Mountains of the Rocky Mountain Range, continue to attract artist like Georgia O'Keefe, as well as campers, hikers and tourists. The outstanding skiingg available at nearby Taos Ski Basin is an added attraction drawing many visitors each winter.
