Perched high in the Sangre de Cristo mountains, and surrounded by the Kit Carson National Forest, River, originally mining town in the late 1800's, was reborn in the 20th century as a resort town. The winter visitors who flock to Red River enjoy Alpine, cross-country and Telemark skiing, along with snowboarding and skiboarding, snowmobiling, sledding and snowshoeing.
But this is not just a ski town. Tourists flock to Red River in the warmer months, too, to enjoy the cool of the high-country summers, and the bright autmun colors. Many love hiking or biking the hundreds of miles of mountain trails, while the less energetic can rent jeeps, horses, or four-wheelers to tour the area, or reach favorite hunting or fishing areas. Some of the more adventurous enjoy the world-class rapids of the nearby Rio Grande.
In addition to enjoying the great outdoors, visitors enjoy outstanding amenities, activities, and attractions of the village. Red River is a place for family fun, from the Red River Trolley to torchlight parades and fireworks and a New Year's Eve Family Ball in winter, through spring's Mardi Gras, to summertime options including the Old West Shootout at Frye's Old Town and melodramas at the Mineshaft Theatre, July's rodeos and parades, and summer-long roller-skating, Ping-pong, video games, or putt-putt golf at Black Mountain Playhouse, go-carts or rides in a surrey around town, and activities like square dancing, bridge tournaments and Bingo at the Community Center. Excellent musical entertainment is always available, including frequent appearances of nationally known local resident Michael Martin Murphey. Numerous art galleries and intriguing shops dot the village, as do many outstanding restaurants. The Community House offers square dances,New YEar's Eve Family Ball for decades. Need a place to stay? The town is chock-full of options, with many picturesques chalets, lodges, B&B's, and cabins, as well as numerous condos available for daily or weekly rentals. Places of worship include St Edwin's Catholic Church, the First Baptist Church, and the non-denominational Faith Mountain Fellowship Church. St. Jame Episcopal church also meets in St. Edwin's.
